Badlands

At the Hollywood Cemetery. A really fun night. Great korean fried chicken wings from Kyochon and a whole spread that would've rivaled anything on 'Good Food.' Blood reddish-orange sunset.
The movie itself gets weirder with time. Evocative Malick images and ambiance but the character ofKip (Martin Sheen) has become too much of an enigma. Felt disconnected and even numb. Maybe that's the point?

Fortune Cookie

"In being kind to others, you will receive kindness back."

By the way the meal consisted of hot & sour soup, vegetable egg rolls, sauteed mixed vegetables, and rice.

On Writing

“I’ve always said there are – to oversimplify it – two kinds of writers. There are architects and gardeners. The architects do blueprints before they drive the first nail, they design the entire house, where the pipes are running, and how many rooms there are going to be, how high the roof will be. But the gardeners just dig a hole and plant the seed and see what comes up. I think all writers are partly architects and partly gardeners, but they tend to one side or another, and I am definitely more of a gardener. In my Hollywood years when everything does work on outlines, I had to put on my architect’s clothes and pretend to be an architect. But my natural inclinations, the way I work, is to give my characters the head and to follow them.”

Freelance Writing

An article talking about the pursuit of writing as a career. "Now that everyone has a project-to-project freelance career, everyone is a hustler."

Just another example of how technology, culture, and work environment is going through a huge transitional period. It is really tough out there.

Huichica Music Festival.

Yes, a lovely sun-baked afternoon in the hills of wine country. What a beautiful buzz. Corn hole. Lakes. And then darkness. Must be the season of the witch.

Lineup
Floating Action 1:45pm
Jonathan Wilson (w/ surprise guest Bob Weir) 3pm
Highlights : Valley of the Silver Moon
Bob Weir on stage for West L.A. Fadeaway / Dark Star/ Truckin' -- loving how Bob Weir is the
'opener' for The Donkeys. Where am I? A northern cali utopia...
The Donkeys 4:30pm

Play corn hole and the sunshine/flowing Sonoma wine catches up.

Cass McCombs w/ The Donkeys as backing band 6:30pm. Missed most of the set. In my own world.
Fruit Bats 8pm -- sun sets behind the treeline creating a cool blue
Blitzen Trapper 10pm
Super Jam 11pm -- 15 minute jam on Season of the Witch. All but maybe 20 people remain. Hypnotic and dark. Very Down by the River.

Go backstage for burritos and The Donkeys by the lake.

The Donkeys at The Echo

Afterparty from Ain't In It at the Cinefamily. Discussion of what's a 'Dolphin Center' pre-show patio... leads the band dedicating the song to Stephen. And people rocked out joyously. Zero pretension.

Just a band. Just a bar band. Love it.

L.A. Premiere at the Cinefamily

A Little Late A-Hole

Spielberg joins the conversation on the death of the film industry.

And the idea of tiered ticket pricing (which we've brought up before) --
you're gonna have to pay $25 for the next Iron Man, you're probably only going to have to pay $7 to see Lincoln." He also said that Lincoln came "this close" to being an HBO movie instead of a theatrical release.

June Gloom

Has really landed down in Santa Monica the last week. No burn off. I suspect if the SMCC shooter had survived on Friday, and had to answer "why?" His answer: June gloom.

Darkness On The Edge of Town

"I've done my best to live the right way. I get up every morning and go to work each day. But your eyes go blind, and your blood runs cold. Sometimes I feel so weak I just want to explode.
Explode and tear this town apart. Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart. Find something itching for something to start...
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man. And I believe in the Promised Land."

The greatest American male album celebrates it's 35th anniversary.
